Gene Wilder's unique remake of a foreign film

The film is a remake of the 1976 film "An Elephant Can be Extremely Deceptive." It's a French film and most foreign films have a different feel and style than American films. I've never seen the original but somehow, Gene Wilder's film is still a very unique film and I'm sure that many aspects of the narrative and plot remain. There are a lot of subtle moments and twists in the story. I think one of my favorite scenes is when Theodore's (Wilder) friend Buddy is revealed, without even saying it explicitly, to be gay and the scene where Theodore goes to speak to him. I also love the ending, very unexpected. It's a very good movie and is proof of Wilder's skills as a writer and director in my opinion. I look forward to watching it again sometimes.

Don't call it a remake! That ugly word does not apply. And how do you know if you never saw the other one that you're referring to? Watch it first, then make the determination if it is a (no don't use remake) American version of the movie. That's the correct term. Remakes weren't invented until the 2000s when that crap began sprouting out all over.

Maybe so, but I was referring to the fact that Gene Wilder's film felt less like a typical American version of a foreign film than one would expect, seeing as they usually end up being dumbed down a bit, in my opinion at least. But yeah, I do need to see the original for better comparison. Still, The Woman in Red is a darn good film.

it is definitely a remake. virtually everything is the same as the original french film. both are funny, but i think 'woman in red' is slightly better due to the little changes they made.
and you are right about the guy being outed, that was a very classy way of doing it.
