Had GPS been available-the premise would need to be changed-if you think about it-if us humans develop GPS maybe a decade after this film,why doesn't the Spaceman have the ability to find his destination without a map? Aaah-who cares,the road trip makes a good movie

Maybe "Spaceman" does, but this wasn't him. This was him in an alien body and with a crashed craft.
