Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

So we know that while they are arriving, it is on a mountain/hill. When they make it to the entrance, there seems to be two sets of steps leading up to the main building (the building where they eat at). Then when Indiana Jones and Willie go to their rooms, it is most probably a part of the same building. When they find the chamber, they end up going from palace level to slightly downward into a cavern (where the ritual takes place). Below that is where the child slaves are digging for the stone. After the mine cart chase, they are thrown out into an edge of a cliff, way up high. The only access ends up being a rickety bridge and the opening, which has no bridge. Additionally, the way they came, which is at the palace steps
IDK. For some odd reason, I just felt like I needed to know the schematics of the palace.

On the entrance side it may have been at a high altitude, but not with steep cliffs or inclines.
How did Mola Ram get to the other side? Did he run across with some troops, while Indy was in the mine cart chase?
And how did Captain Blumburtt, and Little Maharaja get to where they were at the end, when they captured the Thuggee riflemen? I'm thinking that was the far side, where Mola Ram was. I'm not sure now. Is that the side Blumbertt was on?

I think the entrance side, it was probably lower (IDK..)
But to answer your questions or attempt to, Mola Ram had gone through a trap door and so at that point, I would think the audience could ASSUME he knew back ways. Think of a hospital where there are patient/visitor hallways and staff hallways.
Captain Blumbutt (if that is his name, HILARIOUS!) probably went through another back way.
Funny thing is, you mentioned the maharaja and the troops on Captain Blumbutt's side; however, I never remember seeing him after telling Short Round to "take the left tunnel".
From what I know, when I recently watched the movie this Saturday; Mola Ram and his men surrounded Indy and company. Then, after Indy is about 3/4 the way up on the cut rope bridge, these "other" unknown Sikh troops show up and apparently, we know them as Captain Blumbutt's rifleman. So they were on the same side of the bridge. The only people on the temple side were the rest of Mola Ram's bow henchman, who could not shoot worth a dime.

Little Maharaja was leading Blumburtt's troops, but he is running and is a just a blur that you can see for a second or so.
If they just went a back way, it seems to me they would need to go all the way down to river level, or a tunnel below, and then come back up to the height of the bridge. Maybe there was a shallow crossing of the river, but there were crocs there.
They certainly would have been winded, from going down to river level then back up on the other side.
I personally think it was all just an impossible B movie cheat, just like Indy cutting all four bridge ropes by cutting one, or Willie not getting cooked by the heat of the lava.

Yeah, I mean some movies do have the little quirks that I wish they could make more realistic, instead of having the audience think how?
The only reason I say back way for Mola Ram is because we saw him fall through that trap door at the ritual place. Since he is somewhat of a shaman, he supposedly knew all this tricks to get around. In fact, when the maharaj had said something to the effect of not having any of the thuggies within his kingdom, Mola Ram was still able to infiltrate. It could be and it is the best guess that Lal was an inside man as well. Even more so, the thuggies were known to steal children and stones from that shankara stone village without even being seen.
But still, because of the "unrealistic" parts of the movie, it can be left that it could just be one of those things that the movie still leaves to the audience as a "what if".
