I enjoyed watching this series, not to a great extent, but to an extent that I would consider watching Heimat 2 and 3. However, I'm skeptical of prequels and sequels. Would any of you say that these are worth the time?

I have seen Heimat 2 when it was first broadcasted on Dutch television. It was never as good as Heimat 1, as far as I remember. I have Heimat 1 on DVD and watch it again almost one in a year and enjoy it every time. Never bothered about 2 and 3.
What if this is as good as it gets?

Definitely worth watching 2 and 3. Then again, I consider all three to be major works of art - probably my favourite serial drama EVER. Currently watching the lot again for the fourth time. There is more to see in every repeat.

2 is worth watching, lots of good material keeping the familial chain alive.
I tried watching 3, couldn't do it, didn't like it and couldn't get past the first few episodes. Found that I really didn't care about the characters in the 3rd one at all, they seemed very 2 dimensional compared to the first two Heimats.
YMMV of course, I don't think you should base your decision on anyone else's recommendation, watch the first few episodes and judge for yourself.
if it was any good they'd have made an American version by now - Hank Hill
