Heimat
is a series of movies written and directed by Edgar Reitz about life in Germany from the 1840s to 2000.
Shown from the perspective of a family from Hunsrück in Rhineland-Palatinate.
The family's personal and domestic life is set against the backdrop of wider social and political events.
The combined length of the movies — broken into 32 episodes — is 59 hours and 32 minutes.
Making it one of the longest series of feature-length films in cinema history.
Main locations are the village blacksmiths in the fictional community of
"Schabbach"
in the Hunsrück, the
"Fuchsbau-Villa"
in Munich-Schwabing and the
"Günderrodehaus"
above Oberwesel on the Middle Rhine.
Other places are Berlin, Hamburg, Trier, Venice, Leipzig, Dülmen, Neuburg an der Donau, Wasserburg am Inn and many more.
The author and director wants to show a genuine chronicle of simple life in the 20th century after the end of WWI up to German Unification and afterwards.
