Did Hollywood really make a movie with Barbara Steisand playing a jewish girl who dresses as a boy to go study the Torah??? Yes, yes they did. That is like something out of south park, this has to be the DUMBEST movie ever.

Of course there is no appreciation for a good film like this.

TRUST ME, BLOATED JUNK LIKE TOMB RAIDER, CATWOMAN, VAN HELSING, BATTLEFIELD EARTH AND THE ADVENTURES OF PLUTO NASH AND MILLION OF OTHER MOVIES LIKE THESE ONES ARE FAR DUMBER THAN THE CLASSIC "YENTL" IS.

Sorry I don't agree. In fact "Yentl" is my second favorite movie, just behind "Titanic." It was my favorite til "Titianic." I love the music and I don't usually like musicals. I loved the subject matter. I'm not Jewish but Christian and tried imagine not being allowed to study the Bible just because I was female.

Yentl is my favorite movie. The music is the best collaboration of Michel Legrand and the Bergmans sung beautifully by Barbara Streisand. I am neither Christian nor Jewish nor a woman but I love this movie. I've never seen Titanic but now I'm curious to know if it could possibly be better than Yentl.

I think it's amazing they thought they could cast a 40-year-old woman as a teenage girl and people would believe it!

Barbra Streisand knew she was too old for the part of Yentl; she had wanted to do the film at least 10 years before but could not get the backing or cooperation from any film studios when she was younger.

Never is Yentl's age reveal in the movie; noone minded Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy and Emilio Estevez playing teens in "The Breakfast Club" when they were in their mid 20's, so why the fuss? Noone minded Winona Ryder playing a 13 year old in 1989 in "Great Balls of Fire" either, or Matthew Broderick in both "Wargames" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", ditto Ralph Macchio in all "Karate Kid" films.
YENTL BELONGED TO BARBRA AND THERE IS NOONE ELSE THAT COULD HAVE PLAYED HERE WITH SUCH VITALITY AND CONVICTION.
                          SO BACK THE CRAP OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all she certainly doesn't look 40 so who cares?
It's a movie, not real lifeonce you accept the idea that everyone believes she's a guy, just sit back and enjoy the show instead of being so difficult.
By the wayhave you ever seen East of Eden with James Dean? In that one they are supposed to be 17 years old. James Dean's character Cal was in love with his brother's girlfreind Abra, played by Julie Harris. Miss Harris was around 36 years old when she played the part, but no-one would have guessed. Steve McQueen's first major success was in The Blob. He played a seventeen year old but was 28. And so it goes. That's HOllywood. No big deal

What amazes me is that everyone in the film was so blind to the fact that she was a woman. Short hair and a tied down chest does not a convincing man make.
I just found the film a bit dreary, but hey I was workin so it wasn't all bad.

                                  To Pleasedontdie:
You make it sound as though Hollywood came up with the story line. You are clearly a very enlightened individual and so you probably already know that the original story was called "Yentl the Yeshiva Boy", by Isaac Bashevis Singer, who emigrated from Warsaw and whose parents were Hasidic Jews.
Maybe you will do a little research on that computer of yours before you enthrall us again with your vast knowledge, or compare another charming piece of literature with "South Park".
                                  Unbelievable.

My God you people! She directed it, wrote it, starred in it, produced it, sang in it and is even credited for musical sequence stager of all things! What more does an actor have to do to get a little respect around here?!!!
I saw this film when I was a teenager listening to AC/DC, failing P.E. and smoking cigarettes (not that that has anything to do with it) and it kicked my A** and I've had the deepest respect and admiration for it and Barbra ever since.

It was by far not the dumbest movie ever. That honour belongs to Spiderman I and the Panic Room. Oh and a tiny correction for most people, she studies the Talmud not the Thora.
