For me it was when she was telling her son that she knows he loves her and that he shouldn't look back and hate himself for being mean to her.. I'm not usually one to cry but this film got me.
I start to lose it as soon as Teddy walks in, but yeah, this is a wrenching - if beautiful - moment. I can't imagine a better thing a mother in Emma's situation could've said to Tommy. -

This movie has two actors that I don't particularly like - Maclaine and Nicholson - but I love Debra Winger on it.
I cry every time at two scenes- When she is dying. The look she gives at her mother without saying a word.
- The scene where the boys visit her and she tells the older one that she knows that he loves her.
She knows he'll come to feel regret and guilt when he looks back and she wants to save him the pain. It gets me because it's true. The regret is too much.

Wow! I am surprised to hear that. I've seen it several times and there are a couple parts that make me cry.
Even though I am grown now and this movie came out when I was a little child. I am a bit biased because my mom passed away at a fairly young age. Not as young as the character of Emma. But that also meant my sister and I were old enough to be there in the hospital with her and understand a lot of what was going on. I was only 21 when my mom passed and it is incredibly difficult. It's been over a decade and I still miss her so much. Watching this scene where she says goodbye to her boys and then finally passes, I cannot help but cry.
I think the main actors in this movie were phenomenal!
