Was there any reason for the gas station worker to be so nervous? It made him look kind of suspicious.

Well, if someone comes running out of the rain telling me "They're going to kill us" then I'd be nervous too. Shook up even, if they're innocent and not just crazy. I've seen crazy people before,it bothers you. I once saw a person OD ing right in front of me. That's something I'll never forget. Plus, moviewise, this may or may not be the first time something sketchy happened to him. So it was an understandable reaction.

Ehh, I agree with what you say, but the reaction was still over the top.

No more so than any other Carpenter film. That's kind of his writing style, the one hysterical character. Loomis did it in Halloween II, the Asian guy did it in Prince of Darkness, JLC freaked out in the Fog when the dead guy flopped on her, etc. It's a staple of his movies.

I liked that the gas station attendant bookended the movie. It brought an odd sense of closure to the whole thing. The film starts and ends at the gas station.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
