I'm re-watching the movie. That dog was scary when it was searching for a victim. It went into someone's room..all you see is the shadow of his head on the wall.
Which crew member was he? -

It was Norris, the shadow has his distinctive collar and Jew-fro, and double-chin. Also it’s the same room Norris comes out of when the fire alarm goes off. Palmer was roommates with Childs and slept in a separate area.
Also Norris is a scientist and the shadow looks like a man sitting at his desk studying something. Palmer is a blue-collar mechanic who spends his time getting high on his bed listening to music on his headphones, not sitting professionally at a desk in an upright position studying notes. -

It was stunt coordinator Dick Warlock, Carpenter used someone else’s shadow to avoid making it too obvious. But judging solely on what is shown in the film and ignoring anything that transpired behind the scenes (per Roger Ebert, a film is what it shows in the frame and nothing more) all the evidence still points to it being Norris. It was Norris’s room, the shadow has his shape.

U know what else bothers me about the plot. It's that the Thing seemed to only copy the species it was inside the host.
For example, the dog thing attacks other dogs. The human Things attack other humans. So I wish that it showed the dog trying to copy another human.
But then that would take away from this cool scene and all the speculation which is really fun and the best part of this classic horror creature movie. -

Carpenter said they used a random crew member that loosely resembled the other two for the shot of the shadow on the wall for the sake of ambiguity. You can't figure out who it was based on that scene.
Though if you want to read between the lines, he initially filmed the scene with - Norris I think? - before switching him out for the take that made it into the movie.
