I remember seeing First Blood in the theatre when I was a kid and those scene where Rambo leaps from side of rock face into the tree branches below to cushion his fall was so cool.

I watched it again last night and there's no way he only cuts his armhe was over 100 ft high and does a complete flip while falling, and free falls a good 60ft before hitting the tree. I've jumped off plenty of rocks into water from heights up to 68ft and he'd be moving so fast by time he hit the tree he'd blast through the branches and bust in two by hitting a thick branch or be busted up when he hit the ground. But in the movies anything is possible

I think the dense foliage on the branches was meant to cushion his fall somewhat.

          You're not Rambo!

It's true, a mate and I tried this from about half the height Rambo does. I ended up with 38 stitches across various places, broke my right arm and wrist, fractured my left collarbone & a nasty concussion. Unfortunately my mate wasn't so lucky and the fall killed him.

Well, I tried it from a height at least 50 feet higher than the height Rambo jumps from and I got a slight bruise and a bump on the head but other than that I was fine.
