Seriously.. best blu-ray news I've read in a long time. Not only a blu-ray release, but by Criterion.

                  One of my favorites!
That being said, I really hope it's not the director's cut. Its changes are so distracting that I have no interest in ever watching it again. I'll reserve my excitement until further details are released.

Hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure it's the director's cut. Considering it's the same runtime and the same commentary (Mann and Caan)lifted from the DC dvd, that's more likely the case. I'm a little disappointed too, but you gotta look at the bright side; this will be the best we've ever seen this film. That's the silver lining for me. I still can't wait for this release.

I can see why he would cut out Franks loudest "GET OUT!" as it makes him a little more sympathetic. I don't agree with it, but I can see how Mann might prefer it.
But artificially speeding up those slow motion shots at the end just looks like a mastering error. It reminds me of poor quality video with the FPS all whacked out. It is totally at odds with the slow, powerful music. If the new print at least reinstates the slow mo, I will bite. Here's hoping.

My gripe is more petty, but I hate the trimming of the "victory nod" right before the transition to the beach scene. But I too hate the sped up slow motion shots at the end. I think everyone will agree with you on that. I don't understand why Mann feels he has to tamper with his older films.

Criterion has updated their page to specify that it's the director's cut.

I'd also like to know if this criterion edition will have the f'ed up climax motion.

I can't wait to buy this edition. Plus, it's on Blu-Ray with a 4K restoration, new audio commentary from Michael Mann and James Caan, brand new interviews with the stars including Caan and Mann, new featurettes, and the original theatrical trailer. Now I can finally update my Special Edition DVD release from 1998 that included a commentary track by Caan and Mann 2 minutes of extra footage and the original trailer. I guess having a commentary makes the DVD version a Special Edition. I can't wait until January 14th. I might as well by the Blu-Ray Critheron Editions of Blow Out (81) with a then 27 year old John Travolta, directed by Brian De Palma and Missing (82) with Jack Lemmon who goes overseas to collect his son's remains. Powerful films. Enjoy and Happy New Year to everyone!

Should note that the commentary isn't new (not sure if it was available on a previous release, however), but it was recorded in 1995 according to the menu. The interviews with Mann and Caan (separate) are new.

                                          INCREDIBLE NEWS! From mondo-digital:
Though billed as a director's cut, this isn't the same version. The extra scene is still there, but thankfully the beach sequence is back to its original length with the music intact, thus creating the longest version we've had to date (about 30 seconds longer than the DVD) and something much closer to the theatrical version overall, including the restoration of slow motion during the last gunfight instead of the goofy sped up effect applied to the laserdisc and DVD. The DTS-HD 5.1 track sounds excellent (optional English subs are also included), with the score benefiting in particular from the spacious presentation, while the transfer looks terrific with even the darkest scenes popping through far more clearly than before. It's safe to say you can toss your DVD in the trash bin after grabbing this one.
