Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mommie Dearest

    evankasen — 11 years ago(April 02, 2015 05:04 PM)

I have always loved movies that everybody else seems to not like. I really enjoyed "Mommie Dearest", and felt for Christina's character throughout the film. In fact, Diana Scarwid was really convincing her scenes.
BUT there was one line that had me nearly chocking with laughter.
    "CHRISTINA.. BRING ME THE AXE!!!!

and that's why it's an enjoyable film, but not a good one. 2 different concepts.

It's of the "it's so bad it's good" breed of film. It's camp, which is why the critics, Dunaway and Christina had problems with it.
But it's entertaining, and everybody remembers all the line 20 years after watching it just once.

I love this film, having seen it at least a dozen times. Pure camp, great for party viewing.

            Oh, I
            love
it - but not the way in which the film was originally intended.

I love this film - I think in hindsight, she did an absolutely brilliant, brilliant job. She deserved an Oscar for that performance, but it wasn't going to happen due to the fact that they were effectively skewering a film legend.

The first time I saw it I was upset, it was so disturbing. But I enjoyed it more and more after seeing it a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th time. My son and I watched and laughed, mimicking, "no more wire hangers"!!

The problem was it didn't try to show why Joan was this way to Christina. The movie made very little narrative sense, like the scene where Christina is sent to a convent. Next scene she checks out. So what happened in there? At least the book explained her depression and all that.
