Would it have been mean to kill off Jimmy?

It is a little vague regarding Jimmy's fate, as he collapses on the steering wheel of the vehicle Laurie is hiding in.
After watching the deleted scenes for the first time, Jimmy survives. He is just concussed and is in the ambulance with Laurie. This would have been a somewhat bittersweet end to keep in the film, yet it might have turned the taut horror tone of the film a bit sappy, so I can understand why it was removed in the final cut.
It used to annoy me how Jimmy slipped in the pool of blood and yet his shirt is clean when he gets into the vehicle. Now it makes sense that Jimmmy would have changed his shirt and you can see smeared blood stains on his face, as though he has quickly wiped it off.
I find the characters in this classic sequel slasher more likeable than most. A lot of nice characters are killed off and one of the most tragic and well staged one is the lovely Nurse Jill death scene, which brings the full reality of Myers back into Laurie's doped up mindset.
It appears that Jimmy was only spared, because of the original alternate ending of him in the ambulance. If he had been killed, would it have appeared that the film had too much of a mean-streak, considering all the other character deaths?
Norman! What did you put in my tea?
