The last (first) time I saw this flick was in the 80's when my mom and dad first got cable. I was bored and thought, "what the hell"
That was almost 30 years ago. I just bought the DVD on Amazon.com for less than I could have rented it for, and am only 1/2 way through it. I have remembered many things about this landmark movie, but have forgotten the sheer scope of this movie. It can be a difficult movie to watch, in a society inundated with special visual and audio effects, as there is no discernable dialogue. But once one gets past that aspect, it's a very enjoyable move.
On a side note: if one is wanting to watch extraordinary movies about prehistoric "stuff". watch Jurassic Park. If you're wanting to watch a funny flick about prehistoric "stuff" . watch Caveman (a movie which Dennis Quaid will undoubtably deny every starring in).
This ranks up there with one of the best drama movies I've seen. -

Just like you, I first watched this movie when it came on cable, and I was approx 12 years old. I thought it was completely boring.
But I just watched it the other day for the first time since then & it was fascinating to me ! I'm so glad I watched it again !!! -

Me, too. The flick had been kinda mulling around in the back of my head for a while, mostly because of a Robin Williams HBO special I saw where he commented about guys who do too many drugs coming out from watching "Quest for Fire" saying, "Wow, what an incredible documentary!"
I could have sworn that when Noah was gonna do it with one cave-gal, she kept trying to lay on her back and he kept trying to turn her over doggy-style. But I didn't see that in the DVD. -

If your DVD version somehow has the "discovery of the missionary position" scene cut, you've got to get a new, full copy somewhere! That's one of the most remembered scenes of this movie, and one of many that makes it such a blast for any civilized culture on the planet.

I saw it at the cinema around 1981, when I was 16 or 17. And immediately I loved this adventurous, exciting, sexy, humorous and even cute film.
"I don't discriminate between entertainment
and arthouse. A film is a goddam film."
