Is it just me, or was this one of the most poorly selected and trained crews in any movie? Crazy captain, trigger happy jerk second in command, an old man who doesn't want to be there as commander, and a wussy who you knew would be the first to die. Also, if you know you are being picked off one by one, don't get seperated or walk off by yourself.

Aside from Cabren & Baelon, most of the rest were picked because they were flawed. The whole point was to enable them to face, confront and then overcome their fears. Baelon met his end because he was so stubborn he refused to see that yes he was actually afraid, and that his fear took on physical form.
Once they realized that they were being picked off one by one, the pyramid itself separated the remaining crew with those gelatinous doorways.

They gave the crew like 30 seconds to strap themselves in before take off. Didn't look like much more thought was put into selection of the crew. Also, they got the woman to pilot the ship who killed off her previous crew so it seems like whoever was in charge was aiming low and then failed at what he was aiming for - unless he was aiming to kill the crew. The Peter Principle at work, even in outer space.
