Formation Flying Through the Storm

Absolutely adore this film, from the excellent cinematography of carrier operations to John Scott's rousing musical score.
But something occurred to me while watching the DVD for the umpteenth time
Passing through the "storm" was quite disorienting to everybody, including convulsions and then loss of consciousness.
The first time through, only one plane was airborne, but the second time there was an entire strike force flying in close formation.
I'm amazed they didn't run into each other!
