Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back

It's amazing how high the quality of this film was compared to the first one. I just bought the Complete Saga yesterday and was ready to call it quits after it ended, until I watched this one. The sheer leap in acting, dialogue, character reactions, use of different settings, better scene transitions and choreography made this film a masterpiece. Compared to ESB, ANH looks like amateur garbage and that lightsaber duel between obi-wan and vader is just terrible.

Why on earth would you buy a DVD set of a movie series you have apparently never watched?

Actually it was the blu ray set, and I only bought it so I wouldn't be stuck watching a typical low quality film from the 80s I'd rather watch a remastered version to get the best experience.

I think Star Wars is the better all round movie since it tells a complete story thus stands more on its own. Empire is pretty perfect in its own right, but Star Wars edges it.

Yeah, I love Empire as much as the next person, but it really does just bridge Star Wars and Jedi.
Empire doesn't even really have a plot. It's just everyone getting chased around the galaxy while Luke goes on a spiritual retreat to the Dagobah System.

I dunno.. that blurry asteroid field kinda sucks. Why not make it crisp and clear for the Blu-Ray?

Goes without saying that this is the best Star Wars film.

Yeah, A New Hope was never my favorite, though I can appreciate the immense amount of creativity that went into it. I also think the script's was pretty good, and the score and sound design, of course, but it doesn't quite come to its right because of George Lucas' directing.
ESB is one of my favorite movies of all time, and pretty close to perfect.

A New Hope is a feel good movie. Its got a great flow to it. The movie is well edited and I think that its simple story and structure is its strength. Empire is a much better movie, but also far darker and less 'fun' and 'innocent'.
