Anybody else think this is one of his best scores? The battle sequences have brilliant music (especially those sound effects that are similar to the V'Ger noises in Star Trek the Motion Picture). Both the Main Theme and Space Cowboy's theme are so damn triumphant sounding as well. only music i didnt like was the theme tune for the two evil mutants guarding the planet but then maybe thats because its so eerie and threatening.

I totally agree. I just watched BBTS today for the first time in about 15 + years. It was always a favorite of mine as a kid. I'd forgotten a lot about it, including how great the score is.
What helps set this movie apart from a lot of Corman's movies (No offense to them at all, but they never aspire to be anything more than what they are. He was clearly going for something a little bigger here) are the production values, cast and the great score. Horner was still an unknown here, but he seemed to take off right after this.
It's classic Horner. Big, brassy and heroic. It's favorable to a couple of his other 'Space opera' scores from the early 80's, Star trek II & Krull.

I just picked up the track also, it had elements that were used for Star Treks I II and III in it. Very impressive track. Overall the movie was decent, but I've had this strange earge to get it on DVD cause it was something I liked as a kid.

I adore Jame Horner's score for "Battle Beyond the Stars;" it's a very catchy, rousing and dynamic score that once you hear it you never forget it. I still have that lively main theme bouncing around in the back of my head.

Too bad he didn't have the London Symphony Orchestra when he was recording it.
I know this comment is SIX YEARS later, but you are so right. I love the score but it's painfully obvious that the lesser musicians are struggling to play it. Even I noticed the brass section straining to hit the high notes. If Horner had a AAA+ orchestra like the LSO performing his score it would have been 100 times more awesome.

does anyone have the soundtrack. or possibly mp3's of the soundtrack. It is out of print now. and people are trying to sell it for $75+ on ebay and around. that a little high , but i very much would like the soundtrack

Star Trek1 was actually Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner wrote for #2 and 3. In fact one of the two harmony's used in this score was also used in his Star Trek 3 score.

They do a sort of medley of it which comes off quite well. The end is a bit sudden though - none of those trailing flutes from the original.
