I have to say that I like the first version much better. We saw it when we rented it in the early 80's. The scene where Jill gets the call from the police telling her that the call is coming from inside the house scared the crap out of me!This is pre-cell phone days. pre-cordless phone days!
People say that the second part (middle of the movie)is dull. I beg to differ. Charles Durning and Colleen Dewhurst were fantastic! I was terrified for Dewhurst when the killer was in her apartment. Then you have the third act.
Carol Kane in the resturant and getting that call. "Have you checked the chindren?" I felt chills while she screamed!
I had really wanted to like the 2006 version. I really couldn't wait to see the modern day version. .
I just didn't like it. The house was nice. dark most of the time but nice.
Lots of fancy camera work for chills and thrills
It all took place in the house and it was pretty predictable
Sorry to offend those who liked the 2006 over the 1979 but I choose the first. Back then it was more chilling. I guess you had to be there.

I prefer the 2006 version over the 1979 version, actually. As many have said, the original has a great beginning and end but the middle is basically just some boring crime/drama. Didn't care much for way it was structured. I would have much preferred it to be structured the way the remake was, with the story taking place in one night, rather than over a coarse of ten or 15 years or so.

The 2006 film is all right, but it doesnt hold a candle to the original. The 1979 film is one of my favorite horror films ever made, and the opening 20 minutes are among the creepiest in horror history. Also, the original has a much more foreboding atmosphere, and the score is better as well.
Both are good, but I gotta pick the 1979 film. -

1979 version is better from my standpoint. I thought the middle was really cool on a psychological level. As others have said, the opening and ending are both pretty freaky. I give this version an 8 and the remake a 5.
