Loved the film from start to finishvery much reminded me of a Larry Cohen film.
And despite getting a little freaked out by the ending.how does the killer's voice come from behind the door when we discover where he is (was it the husband perhaps?)
    "Gran'pa was always tha best."

In the sequel When a Stranger Calls Back, the same cop from here, played by Charles Durning, investigates another babysitter case where a guy was outside talking to the girl but the children disappeared from inside the house. He found out the guy was a ventriloquist, perhaps Curt Duncan was too.

It's funny you bring this up because as I was reading your post I remember my Dad saying something at this moment in the movie because I asked him that exact question. I remember him telling me that people can learn to "throw" their voice. It's an acquired skill of some type. Yes.he could have been messing with me BUT.I remember the tone of his voice and look on his face and I think he was actually serious. Who knows. I cannot ask him again, he's passed away 😞 but maybe I could look up some info on that. Interesting.
BUT, I think it was an absolutely genius scene, regardless.
