This post includes major spoiler about the ending scene and other scenes, so if you dont wish to know DONT READ, I dont want anybody to get angry with me for spoiling this movie for you ! LOL
In the beginning Champ is really angry at his X(of course), cause she left him and his son when they needed her the most. But as the movie progress he comes to terms with the fact that she is T.Js mother
After the boxing match he says to his coach he wants to talk with his son(we al know he wont survive) he has the power to say something meaningfull and he does, he actually says "She is a good person" cause he KNOWS that when he is gone T.J will need his mother in his life! So IMO The Champ dies as a hero, and is a champ outside the boxing ring as well(the first times i saw the movie I didnt get this , now I do). I think its an important message to divorced parents to put asides their feelings, and think of their childrens !
Also have anybody noticed how Jon Voights voice changes in the ending scene ? You can actually hear that The Champ will die, because JV change his voice so we will know that !! Man is Jon Voight an amazing actor or what, not many actors think about detaljs like that. He is my fave movie actor these days and I hope to see more movies with him !(especially old ones).
