It's surprisingly soft and kind of boring.
Sure, the prison conditions were not like today & Hayes wasn't lucky,
    but he deserved jail.
No torture, no villains, no sadists, nice Turks, an easy escape without much drama.
The screenplay for this movie is nearly a complete fiction.
It's actually quite amazing how Oliver Stone & Alan Parker didn't care for the facts at all.
    Why?
They simply decided that they needed a hellish prison, sadistic Turks & an "innocent" American boy,
because otherwise it would have been a really boring story.
It creates a totally false impression of the real events & Turkey.
(Yes, I've been to Turkey myself & No, I'm not Turkish)
It's one of the most cynical, manipulative and deceptive films ever made
and belongs right next to Nazi propaganda films like "Jud Suss".
It works just in the same ways.
The 'Rifki' character has even the same negative clichs that the Nazis used for 'Jews'.
The Fhrer would have been happy to hire Alan Parker.

I totally see what you are saying. I definitely picked up on this myself.
