Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Martin

These are the factors I like about "Martin" (* Required, - Optional)
*Total focus on the story, no distractions (ex: pop culture, history, etc.)
-Very subtle, understated comedic aspects without having the film being labeled a comedy or dark comedy necessarily
*1970's feel: Doesn't have to be from the 70's, but the feel of it. The sense of Conflict, confusion, and existentialism common in many movies during and after the Vietnam War.
    -Great unusual character study
*No excess dialogue or "overanalyzation" (common in 1990's movies and afterward
That's all I can think of for now. Some good examples of the above descriptions are:
    "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974)
    "Taxi Driver" (1976)
"The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane" (1977)
    (and of course) "Martin" (1977)
Oddly enough, 3 of them were closely released, while TCM came out only a couple of years earlier.

"Martin" is in a class by itself, but this film calls to mind "Dead of Night" aka "Deathdream":

And a couple more films that meet your criteria:
        "Let's Scare Jessica to Death":

        "The Other":

I would definitely recommend 'The Addiction' (Abel Ferrara's modern day vampire film).
Also 'The Reflecting Skin' and 'Messiah of Evil' for a similar kind of atmosphere.
He left a note. He left a simple little note that said "I've gone out the window."

There is a movie called Angst (1983). It's an austrian film about a serial killer who can't control his impulses. Very similar in a lot of ways to Martin.

I have had discussion with people about the similarities between Martin and Taxi Driver, the oddest similarity is both Martin and Travis Bickle have a line of communication, Martin on the radio show and Bickles letters, and obviously the isolation is a key factor.

I second the recommendation for Let's Scare Jessica to Death. While I was watching the film, I felt that they had a similar vibe to them.
I've been waiting for you, Ben.
