Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Martin

I really like this movie. That being said there is this one thing that bugs me when I watch it.
When Martin drinks the blood of his drugged victims, wouldn't the chemicals he injected them with affect him as well? The narcotics would need to enter their bloodstream to make them go to sleep. This is assuming of course that there is nothing truly supernatural about Martin that could ward off such effects.

I wondered about that too. My guess is as the chemicals circulated throughout the victim's bloodstream they became fairly dispersed and therefore less potent. Martin may have felt some slight affects, but he would not become incapacitated because any dosage he received would be far decreased compared to the initial injection. Or Romero just didn't think of that. Either way, still a great movie.

While I'm not sure that was the director's intent, that's an interesting way of looking at it, if he is not truly a vampire. It would explain his need to drink blood without realizing why.

Martin also described feeling shaky when he hadn't drunken blood in a while.
