I was thinking about this movie; got it on dvd, huge fan, etc,etc and I was thinking, "yeah, so the flashbacks are supposed to accredit him as crazy, but it kind of mimics the flashbacks or dreams people describe having from past lives." i think I am aware of what romero, and/or whatever writers were involved, being that dreams reiterate what was seen in reality-and martin just happened to see a lot of vampire movies-but hypothetically, what if he hadnt? Was he a vampire in a past life? This would explain why he thinks he's 84 years old, a vamp, and so on and so on. or hes just very confused, I guess that pretty much explains the topic, although it is quite convoluted. please only respond if you have anything constructive to contribute, thank you.

SPOILER ALERT!!!!!
Romero has said that he believes Martin was just "mixed up", his own words on the Lion's Gate DVD commentary. At first I was disappointed, believing the film's ambiguity to be its true beauty, but I now believe that this revelation does nothing to change this. After all, I had seen the film several times, and still hadn't made a determination as to whether he was a vampire or just a loony.. -

Yeah, I think it's a strength of the movie that the nature of those shots isn't explained. Indeed, I'm not sure it's ever even made clear that these images are running through Martin's mind. He maybe be totally unaware of these things we're seeing, or at least not thinking of them when they're being shown to us. There are lots of things they can be:
- Martin's fantasies about what being a vampire is/what he's doing. And, of course, his understanding of what he's doing is much more appealing than the reality of the situation.
- Martin's false memories of things he (mistakenly) believes are part of his pastmemories that are filtered through the myths and conventions of horror films.
- Martin's real memories of things that actually did happen to him in the past.
- Flashbacks to Martin's past that aren't necessarily going through his mind, but that the movie is connecting to his current situation/actions.
- A sort of alternate movie of this story. A more traditional vampire film, with an exotic setting in the past, that is used to (mostly ironically) comment on horror movies and their conventions when it is compared to Romero's contemporary vampire story set in a very drab and unexciting location.

Maybe Martin is stuck reincarnating in that family over and over again, and that's why they think their family keeps producing vampires. It's as good a supernatural explanation as any, not that I think this film really needs one.
