Sure it's a little on the nose, but I don't think there's ever been better use of a "pop" song (i.e. non score) in a movie. Certainly not a horror movie. Combined with the dying sunlight dappling through the trees it just sets the mood so perfectly for what's about to come.
It also transports you right into the late 70s, which is a crucial component of the movie IMO. Not only the zeitgeist of the era, but teens with no internet or cell phones. There's a certain vulnerability there.A journey into the realm of the obscure:

Dont Fear the Reaper will forever be inextricably linked to Halloween for me. Ive been re-watching Scream lately and have to say, after the opening sequence, the nods to Halloween are my favorite things about it.
