      Sure, NASA did some studies on using Apollo hardware to get to Mars (and Venus). Conceivably we could've done a flyby mission as early as 1975. Basically you'd need to launch multiple Saturn V vehicles to assemble and fuel a transit vehicle before sending up a crew. You can read the [rather technical] details here:
