He wanted Steve McQueen, who does look a bit more Irish than Roy. I dug Roy in this movie and I like him as an actor. He didn't stand out from the other men and blended into the woodwork of the city, which I think worked. But at the same time I can see Friedkin's point that a bigger star with more bravado might have woken up the movie, at least while in theaters. Again, I love this movie and can't see it different. Personally, I think the only real sympathetic character is the French guy. Terrorist Bob Dylan ironically seemed like a nice guy. But anyhow… Roy Scheider was as mellow as you get in this.

as i rewatch again i think McQueen would have been good for reasons like… he's actually Irish while Scheider if anything looks Italian American not even Black Irish to me… but one thing that both of them don't have… that is Roy doesn't and McQueen probably couldn't… is playing the character as someone who was a terrible, soulless person before he went to the jungle and became a really good, honest guy in hell… he never seemed like he could have been as bad as the hitman says he was… i guess i'm saying he doens't part of a mob, and I'm not sure if McQueen would either…
