Well Francine's obviously the nicer of the two and more likely to be pleasant company to be with. But Jimmy is also a special person too. Though it's unlikely he'd find me worth talking to.

i'm sorry, but i found jimmy to be insufferable. my mother once told me the jimmy character reminded her of my father, and she is so right. this guy just didn't know how to treat people(except for the buddies he played and partied with; he was sincere and loyal to them). yeah, i thought the jimmy character was too much.
francine was lovely. she really loved jimmy to deal with his massive mood swings.
i really liked this film. it could have been tighter, but it has many strengths. -

Definitely Francine. I don't think she was lovely, though. She was a complicated and insecure person all the way and just managed to overcome her lack of self-confidence (which might be the main reason why she was attracted to a misogynistic egomaniac like Jimmy in the first place) in the end by anaesthesising herself with an artificial hardness like it is carried by so many stars - I think the final Francine somewhat resembles the particular face of stardom of Liza's mother Judy Garland as well as her own. At least, Francine consciously decides not to see Jimmy again whereas I don't think Jimmy was aware of the reason why she didn't come. He might had a feeling why but he didn't know and he stayed like this throughout the whole movie. This is why I sympathize more with Francine since she changes, even though getting hardened and obviously depressed as well (It doesn't seem like she's exactly happy in the end) - Jimmy doesn't change and apparently, he never catched Francine's reasons for splitting up with him.
Anyway, I was really surprised by this film - it's manic characters and tone, almost like an Andrzej Zulawski-Movie, combined with the OTT camp of the classic Hollywood musical. I'd say Scorsese matched his goal perfectly. -

Jimmy's character is the problem with the film. He's a little nuts and at times very unlikable and you just don't want to see them together at the end of the film. They are't but then what's the point of going on this journey with them? This should have been a love story about two people you want to see togther but they just can't work it out, like The Way We Were.

Jimmy was funny and hot, but in a bad situation, he was a total b-astard.He screamed and said bad thing to make Francine feel bad.And he was a jeaolous and paranoic guy.His job was the first thing to him, and he did not respect Francine. In the extras, there is a delete scene where you can see he has been sleeping with Bernice, that blonde girl who sings " Blue Moon".
He was a cheater, and a bad husband.I definetly choose Francine. She was nice and good person, and loved Jimmy.
