Robert De Niro was so sexy in this film, that I thought I should mention it on here. His performance was great, that is a given for anyone who's seen the movie, but lets take a moment to recognize the fact that we would have fallen for the man just as Francine had. Despite the fact that he was a selfish, quick-tempered jerk at times, he was so good looking, charming, passionate and spontaneousand did I already mention that Robert De Niro was beyond sexy in this role?

Agreed. What people somehow seem to overlook when they say Jimmy is too unlikable a character are the very qualities you point out in De Niro's performance. "New York, New York" may not be a perfect movie in every sense, but it certainly deserves a lot more love and attention than it gets!

There were several scenes where I thought "Now this is why De Niro is on everyone's top 10 actors list." He did a superb acting job. I love how he got the essence of Jimmy across without exaggerating him or making him a clown, which would have been easy to do.
No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Yes, DeNiro is a brilliant actor and I love him in many, many films but not this one. He really sinks this movie into a very cold, austere place that doesn't invite the audience in to get emotionally involved. Yes, his character is loathesome and unlikable but I've seen many actors play loathesome and unlikable characters and yet they draw me deeply into their plight. Not here I just wanted to turn off the movie. Minnelli on the other hand really steals the show. She is just great here and I can't believe I actually am saying that she outdoes DeNiro by a long shot. He is undoubtedly a much greater and far more versatile actor but in this movie Liza has the shining hour. Also, I can't for the life of me classify this movie as a musical. There is not that much music in it. It's much more a drama that happens to deal with two characters who work in the music industry. There should have been more music that propelled the plot. It's way too long and needed serious editing. Also, DeNiro's few singing lines to the introduction of Blue Moon (I think) is very laughable and sooooo unmusical.

He was extremely good looking and sexy in this film, as he is in Falling in Love, just remembered that one, 7 years later, but he looks identical to this film, if I remember right. There is just something about him Your eyes stay glued, and they just seem to follow him throughout the scene. I loved the opening scene of this film, the first time he meets her. To me he would have been irresistible, and that gum!!!!(adorable)

Finally someone sees the light. Much thanks to all posters of this thread and to the OP for recognizing how great Robert DeNiro is in this film.
You have no idea how many times I have literally blown a gasket(not unlike Jimmy in this film) over them talking about how Jimmy Doyle is just a toned down Travis Bickle. Morons can't tell films and performances apart.
Despite the fact that he was a selfish, quick-tempered jerk at times, he was so good looking, charming, passionate and spontaneous
And above allhonest. By that I don't mean the boy scouts kind of honesty(his hilarious refusals against paying bills shows otherwise) but a honesty about who he is, a distaste for hypocrisy that's absent in many people. Like in the end, his comment about seeing "Sappy Endings." That film of hers which is something that's obviously beneath her.
The main reason why she loved him however was his complete unpredictability. Like reading a poem about hims written by her and then taking her to get married at once. And while she's often exasperated by it, it's no doubt that's what fascinates and attracts her.
It's also a great character in that by the end he becomes this considerate gentleman who's all charm and seems to be more in-control. And he seems to be rid of his own jealousy and insecurity.
and did I already mention that Robert De Niro was beyond sexy in this role?
Yes he was. I am a heterosexual man and even I can tell that. I can't imagine how it must be for girls and gays to see someone as charismatic as him.

If you fall for a creep like Jimmy, you deserve what you get. De Niro did such a good job of portraying this unbelievably selfish A-hole that I had trouble watching the movie.
How old does one have to be to realize that looks have little to do with a real relationship?

Oh yeah! De Niro is the man!
I think speaking of looks, The Deer Hunter. Sexy, (well almost in everything,) but so far what I have seen of his would be H E A T. 52 years old when it was filmed, but oh so sexy!!!!

Amazing performances by both. Liza's voice is incredible, I just wanted to hear Chet Baker weaving his magic in there on some of those slower tracks.
De Niro's acting was spot on in every sense and he looked every part the sax player. Complete with the volatile, self obsessed, tempremental pig of a muso thrown in.
Needless to say I often hated his character. And when he was nice it was just a relief. Watching him traverse the emotional rollercoaster made me feel a little like the guy who kept smacking his toe with a hammer. When asked why he did it he said because it felt so good when the pain stopped.
All in all brilliant performances alround in a film that was difficult to enjoy.
As a post script I liked how well the bouncers behaved when Jimmy lost the plot in the venue. These days they definately would've let him have it once he was outside.

51 years old when it was filmed. Films are not released right after filming, they go into editing and sound mixing etc, post-production in short. But point taken.

All I can say is, I liked his slick hairstyle (reminiscent of young Don Vito's) and his choice of clothing. And them 1940s shoes were rad.
I also digged his mannerisms and spontaneity. Add all this together, and you bet it would work smoothly with the ladies You know, eliminate his selfishness and anger - and Jimmy Doyle would be one cool cat everyone could look up to, ha ha.
Do you know how HARD it is for a bloody black man to get a cab on Thanksgiving?

It's a matter of taste I guess. I found the character of Jimmy Doyle far too annoying to be sexy, and the big problem I had with the movie is that he was so annoying from the first moment we saw him that I thought Francine should have never given him a chance and never saw anything good that could have possibly come out of it, so the rest of the movie was just a confirmation of this.
