1977 was a great year to kick-start this list. Two films directed by the creators of Raiders Of The Lost Ark that topped the box office charts for the year would each land DGA nominations and Oscar nominations for Best Director. Both films were scored by John Williams, who competed against himself as both films were nominated for Best Score. The two films also competed at the Oscars for Film Editing, Visual Effects, Art Direction, and Sound. Both films somehow won Special Achievement Oscars for Sound Effects.

Yes, I still consider 1977 and 1982 to be the greatest years ever for science fiction films.

Well, you seem to be in agreement with my list, as both years combined had five movies on the list. I would make the case that 1986 was a great year for science fiction films as well. Anyway, nice to meet someone friendly. Some folks aren't so nice it seems. I guess that's why the folks at IMDb are shutting these discussion boards down.

I am surprised they are not trying to make it a feature that you have to sign up for. I wouldn't do it, but I bet many users would pay to continue posting here.

            Cheers.

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind was one of three films that made director Steven Spielberg the most successful film director (financially) in Hollywood in 1981, just in time for the 1982 film Poltergeist.
