Didn't Mr Bronson drive Danny Kendall to suicide? Or is my memory playing tricks again?
Your memory most certainly is playing tricks with you. Danny Kendall died of an undiagnosed heart condition, it was nothing to do with Bronson. -

Actually I have found out that it wasn't a heart condition, but it wasn't suiside either. This page will explain

Honourable mention to gruff maths teacher Mr Keating, who appeared from Series 2 onwards for several years. While he was usually a strict, no-nonsense disiplinarian, whose class you simply didn't mess around in (let's be honest, the sort of teacher you need in schools nowadays), he was mostly fair and showed occasional humanity. But there was one incident that he showed poor judgement in. There was a lack of textbooks, so everyone had to share. He set some homework. He told Pogo to do it one night, then to give the book to Stewpot and Matthew so they could do it the following nights. But by the next lesson, Pogo had forgotten to hand over the book. Mr Keating angrily told him off for his stupidity and said he would be joining Stewpot and Matthew in detention.
So even though he was fully aware of the perfectly valid reason Stewpot and Matthew had for not doing their homework, he still systematically gave them a detention? If my teachers behaved like that, I'd have been furious - and I was a good boy at school! -

Hicks was sadistic, I cheered when Baxter laid him out. Most PE Teachers can be tough (like Baxter was, I had one who was tough, but humorous at the same time, once farted whilst Rugby scrum training and said "That's why you never get behind me during a scrum" and had us rolling on the floor laughing)
Don't know about Deverill, I stopped watching it in 89.
Mr Smart had issues but wasn't evil.
Bronson was in no way evil, A latin-master from a Grammer School forced to work in a Comprehensive teaching French to rebellious working class kids after Rodney Bennett, Brookdale and Grange Hill merged into one school (Common practice in those days, my school did the same) he was bound to be frustrated. He took the thing with Kendall too far though, potentially costing him a job, he stepped over the line there, but that was his only real fault. He was just overly-strict. -
