        I have to say, I love the scene so much, I've never bothered to ask myself that question.
        Trying to up his street cred, or "plains cred" or whatever, despite being the most tenderfoot SOB you've ever seen.
        His name alone makes me crack up.

            Steve Franken is hilarious.
            The entire point of the scene is that they knew he didn't do it. That he would never be able to do it, which makes his confessing that much funnier.
