Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — King Kong

    Chrisbc-1 — 9 years ago(November 22, 2016 11:18 AM)

    1. Fred put aside his ego when Dwan needed medical attention and allowed Jack to come to her aide.
    2. Fred ordered the gate to be opened for Jack despite Kong being angry and not too far away. They must have heard Kong coming, plus they had the radar warning.
    3. Fred sacrificed his life in order to distract Kong long enough for Jack and Dwan to escape the New York event.

You didn't mention his selfless efforts to help Dwan advance her career.

I don't think Fred willingly sacrificed his life. I think it just happened because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

that's what makes him a great villain in my opinion he advances the plot but not at the risk of being a 1-dimensional mustache-twirler. He was driven by money and exploited Dwan, the island, and Kong at every chance (and was often mean to his subordinates) but at the same time was also compassionate and cared about people.
