Released on this date–17 Dec.–in 1976, John Guillermin's KING KONG.
The Dino De Laurentiis-produced remake sported a stellar cast, incredible score, great cinematography, groundbreaking effects and a solid script that updated the bones of the 1933 classic to reflect the sensibilities and concerns of the day.
It was a big hit, earning back nearly 3 times its budget, but for some good and a lot of stupid reasons (mostly things that had nothing to do with the movie itself), it was one of those movies that became, in some quarters, fashionable to bash, and one still finds traces of the stink of that sentiment, even all these years later, but those who came to love it, including multiple generations who grew up on it, have mostly won out in the end. Because, warts and all, it's just a great movie.
