I must have seen this movie at least 5 times over the years. How did I never notice the two cars driving in reverse as Sue walks in front of the remains of Carries house. Creepy as hell. I'm guessing It was used to convey a dream state. Funny how you can pick up on different things each time you watch a film.

Brian DePalma filmed this sequence in slow motion in reverse. He found that it gave an eerie dreamlike quality to the sequence when the film was reversed.
In reality, Amy Irving was walking backwards. The scene was filmed in slow motion, then reversed so it appears that she is walking forward, which explains the cars moving backwards.
Notice that there is a 'ghost like' glow around Irving. This was what DePalma wanted.
