How did they write Annie into the show? Was she adopted?

I check this board periodically so I'm surprized I haven't noticed your post before!
The story was that Annie's parents were killed. It may have been a car accident but I'm not sure. Apparently years before, like when Annie was a baby, her parents had taken a trip and made up a will up stating that if something happened to them then the Lawrences would have custody. It was all but forgotten until Annie's parents died, but the will was still binding.
Annie shows up with a chip on her shoulder acting like she can handle what's happened without any help ("I know, little orphan Annie. I'll rise above it"). Well, Kate eventually breaks her and she settles right in, most likely giving the show a nice little ratings boost. Well, Buddy was getting older and didn't need as much TLC from the matriarch as when she was younger, so someone had to step in.
Kind of reminded me of the Oliver addition on the Brady Bunch. I never really approved of that but adding Annie actually worked out well. The character was a nice contrast to how the Lawrence characters were written.
And you wanna know the worst part? You're from outta state! -

Long-running shows often added new children when the original youngsters started growing up and became less cute. "The Cosby Show", "The Waltons," "Little House on the Prairie," "Happy Days", "All in the Family". "Brady Bunch," "Eight is Enough" are a few I can think of.

There was something about Quinn Cummings that really irked me. We are the same age.. It might have been her precociousness or her voice. But, the one thing that I know was that I had a mad mad crush on Kristy McNichol With very lenient parents, I was able to watch it even thought I was only 8.
