In one episode Louise and George try to persuade Mother Jefferson against joining them on a cruise. George asks Tom & Helen to act like they're coming because Mother Jefferson hates Tom & Helen and won't want to come if they're going.
Do you think Mother Jefferson's hatred of Tom & Helen is a reflection on George (like how Mother Jefferson will take George's side even if she doesn't know what Louise & George are arguing about) or is it reverse: does George get his racial attitudes from Mother Jefferson?
If that's so it's understandable. Inter-racial marriages were rare enough in George's time, they were downright taboo in Mother Jefferson's Time.
I remember a scene from the Francis Ford Coppola film The Cotton Club (set in the 20's and 30's) where a hotel manager refuses to give a room to Gregory Hines and Lonette McKee because the hotel has a policy against inter-racial couples. The manager changes his tune when he learns McKee is actually a very light-skinned African-American.
