A rating of 5.8 for this 70's disaster movie surely not. What's wrong with people. Maybe viewing it today it could look a little poorer than it did back then. Shame.

I think that when compared with inferno and adventure it pails in comparison. (Sorry about that lack of grammar) I like the film but many hated it. Citing the dire acting. Ava Gardner. That scary grocery guy. That slutty single mother. The guy from all those spoofs.

surely, yes, since it received 1*-2** from critics when released. Special effects do not a great film make, and who knows if Mr Robson was even in charge of those chores.

It was designed as a big screen disaster spectacle and utilized as much technology as it could at the time to showcase the devastating effect of a major earthquake. For it's time it was awesome and regardless of what pompous critics say, some films are just critic proof. The box office was proof enough here. Now it is seen as a product of it's time and I think for the full impact of the film to work, it would still need to be seen on a big screen in sensurround.
The Poseidon Adventure-72' was trashed by critics; but this one was a smash too and deservedly so. It had all the right elements for it to work and had plenty of emotional impact to boot. It wasn't scared to kill of it's best characters, the acting was decent and it delivered what it's title promised, an adventure.

5 from me and that's more for its value as an unintended comedy and template for further major epics like Flying High (Airplane to some).
