I've read that Pusser was abusive towards his wife, not uncommon to men in those days, especially southern men who were wrestler types. There is speculation to whether he killed her and tried to hide it by saying it was an ambush. The killers were never brought to trial. Nobody charged in the case. It's an absolutely brutal and effectively sequence in the movie, even if the windows are never hit with all that gun fire being exchanged. The presence and acting of Elizabeth Hartman makes the scene really powerful. Not a lot of information on line about the bullet holes in the actual car and how many shots made it through, etc. Today, forensics would be all over that case.
