A kid's movie as in that the protagonists where kids and not made for kids.
I really liked this movie, I like the thesis it was built around it ("who can you tell is crazy in an already crazy environment?") but I think it could have been better told through a child.
For one, the grown ups seem to have a pretty good idea on who's acting crazy, a child in the same situation might not understand what's going on. It'll add an innocent and naive commentary to the situation, which I think would be more interesting. A bit like South Park: the silliness of the world as seen through the objectivity that can only come from a kid's eyes.
I know the soldiers in the film are meant to be inept, but does it really take half a dozen men to take down one man whose lost his ability to make rational decisions? If the main characters where kids, they'd only have to run from the soldiers and not get involved in the boring and overly numerous shoot-out scenes. Being chased by soldiers in white environmental suits and deranged town-folk would be more scary if the chased were more vulnerable and not able to shoot back.
Lastly, there's a greater emotional investment. It'll be more distressing to see your sibling, parents and friends torn away from you so suddenly, to watch loved ones turn into monstrous killers.
The end of 'The Crazies' didn't do much for me, I saw it from a mile away and it didn't have the impact it was supposed to have. I know GAR pretty much invented the clich with the sole survivor hero being a former war vet who pretty much loses when a loved one dies - but it is still a clich.
