Why did the masked guys take the fishing poles off the family's wall? I assume so they couldn't use it as a weapon against them or was it in the case that they might go fishing and catch the virus?

Well, we did see the army guys stealing stuff earlier in the movie. They took green stamps and cash. Maybe the one guy liked that fishing pole.
