ABC paid a FORTUNE to grab this from NBC and CBS. How many of you first saw this on the premier broadcast in 1974 ? Just wondering.

I clearly remember it, I was beyond excited. I was 10; and I remember it aired on a Sunday night and I had no school then next day.
I'm 52 now and I still love this movie.

I was 10 when I first saw this movie also. It wasn't the premiere, it was in 1986. I stayed home sick from school, but this movie was so exciting, I temporarily forgot how bad I felt. It's still one of my faves.

Yes, I saw it. I remember seeing the ad in the TV guide while sitting in the backseat of my mother's car. I was excited. But I ended up falling asleep during the movie.

OMG yes, I was 10 as well and I remember very distinctly waiting with baited breath for the TV premiere. I remember the commercials that showed several films that ABC had acquired the rights to broadcast that year including Funny Girl, The French Connection, Fiddler on the Roof and several others. I used our new audio cassette to record it and listened to it until I had it memorized. I can still remember the bug wooden cabinet that our tv was in and sitting crossed legged on the floor in front not of it on blue green shag carpeting.. So yes, I did watch it lol.

I made sure I caught it. The theater ads in the papers were intriguing, having me think "what exactly happens to these people?" and then I was amazed when I heard it was about a ship being turned upside down.
I loved it. It had humor, pathos, suspense, and I remember being really saddened by Stella Stevens being burned to death just before they made it out. Even now, I can't bear to watch Gene Hackman balance himself on that valve to shut the steam off.
When I go to the storage areas in the basement in our building at work, I see an identical valve right above the staircase. I would love to jump up on it and scream "how many more lives?" I think I'd be taken to Human Resources based on psychological disturbances if I did.
I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.
