And then there was the Doctor Who episode where the Brig explains that a particularly sensitive task has been assigned to the British because they're the only country everyone can trust.

I was coming here to say the same thing. The sheer Englishness of it Reminded me of a line from And Then There Were None:

Saw the film for the first time last night and just cracked up at that line! The lovely Peter Cushing probably had a ball saying it. I bet Christopher Lee was even a bit jealous that he didn't get the line!

That line is absolute classic and it just comes out of nowhere. Just when the plot really thickens, when everything is at it's worst and most tense, when a major plot point is being revealed THAT line is dropped for comedy relief.
