James Caan and Pacino both miscast

James Caan is jewish and doesn't look Italian and Pacino is way too small to be believable as Marlon Brando's son.
Who would you have cast instead? -

You're right about James Caan not looking Italian.
There also seem to be a couple of movies where someone of Italian background plays the role of an Irishman. Never really understood it, but as long as it doesn't take me out of the experience and the acting is of a high quality, I let it pass.
Not sure that I agree on the Pacino comment. But then again, it has been a while since I saw these films. I remember really enjoying Pacino's physical, vocal and personality changes over the course of the trilogy. Even 3.
I know De Niro was considered for this film, and it didn't pan out until his role in the sequel. If he didn't play a young Brando, I would have liked to have seen him in the role of one of the brothers. But then we wouldn't have been treated to his performance in 2. -

I always find it distracting when the actor playing a son is so much shorter than the father. It's unnatural. He's a great actor, but since Brando was so perfect as Don Corleone they should've found somebody with the same height to play his son.
I did enjoy De Niro as Don Corleone, but he would've been an even better Michael than Pacino. Not sure who could have replaced De Niro for part II though. Nicholson? Is Chazz Palminteri old enough? -

She's a character in the movie and one of the tallest women on screen.
You shouldn't have to make excuses to suspend your disbelief like that. At least, I can't do it, so I don't see how we can be expected to. -

It's a pet hate of mine. I think it's such an easy thing to get right. There are thousands of actors out there. Find one who is a believable match. If you insist on that actor being the son, find an alternative father.

I looked up James Cann's height today and it's 5'9. Just how short is Pacino really? He looks a foot shorter than a 6 foot Leo in OUATIH.

True, but it's not unheard of. I have a couple of cousins that are shorter than their dad

I honestly don't understand the OP's problem with the height issue.
These things all vary within a family. My husband and I are both fairly short people… him being 5 foot 9, me being just below 5 feet. Our son is taller than us, being 6 feet. There are tall people on both sides.
It's the same with features. My siblings and I don't all resemble each other.
I really don't understand the OP's trouble with casting. This is 4 months ago? A different account/sock? Whatever…. It's a shame that these things bother the OP. Something like that spoils the whole film!

I did used to think that children were usually taller than their parents because I saw how they usually were, but that's not necessarily so
Peggy Lipton's daughters are both shorter than she was
About resemblance, that reminds me, there was a Dateline about a man who had murdered 2 wives. He's doofy looking so I didn't get what they saw in him. His son was on the show and he did realize that his father had killed his mother. Not like some kids who say their parent is innocent and blindly support them
I looked him up on facebook and told him I had seen him on Dateline, I thought he was a cool guy and that he looks nothing like his father
He wrote back and said "Thankfully"

Oh wow! The guy wrote back? That was really nice!
As for features, we sometimes get certain things from our parent… I got my father's fingers.. short, and tapered.. hard to describe, but they are his hands.
Some people may not look at all like their parents or a sibling, but they may have a certain way of walking or certain expressions.
As for being shorter or taller than our parents, we all start out being smaller.

So true!
I noticed the shape of my arms are like my dad's and I have his smile, ears and hair texture
My hair and eye color are like my mom's

Yeah, Brando developed quite an eating disorder. Pacino used to be so good looking. He hasn't aged well
Probably a smoker and spent too much time in the sun
