Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Walkabout

    muttley — 6 years ago(December 24, 2019 04:39 AM)

In Australia, when an Aborigine man-child reaches sixteen, he is sent out into the land. For months he must live from it. Sleep on it. Even if it means killing his fellow creatures. The Aborigines call it the WALKABOUT.
A lot of randomness in this movie but it doesn't take anything away from the beauty or message of this film. It has 3 things all great films have. Story, sound and imagery.
Stars Jenny Agutter. 5 years later she would be chased by sandmen because she's going to turn 30 and 5 years after that she falls in love with a werewolf.
The one thing I could never figure out is what was up the people and the weather balloons?

This is one of my favourite movies of all time. There is something so gut wrenching and primal about it. It sends shivers up my spine. Truly awesome.

The first time I watched I was quite young. It wasn't till years later and multiple viewings that I truly appreciated it for everything it offers.

An excellent film, but sad at the end. What I couldn't figure out is why the Dad was trying to kill his kids. Obviously, he's insane, but I wanted more of an explanation than that.
And David Gulpilil would provide excellent comedy relief in
          Crocodile Dundee.

I've never came up with a good reason the father did that other than to set the stage for his children going on their own rite of passage journey.

I think he lost his job. It was implied when he sat down on the bench. And the worried look down on the children in the pool. And of course her husband's remark in the end about promotion - the survival game of civilised men cf. that in the outback. Just my gut feeling
Wheatherguys … well that was just how the baloons that they caught were lost.

                  A Blast From The Past!
I don't think losing his job would cause him to try and kill his children. I think he just went bat **** crazy.

                    Well …
That’s a matter of opinion. It didn’t make him try of course right away as such it just triggered something that snapped in his mind.
Why else would Roeg make her flashback when her husband mentions old mel losing his job.

A masterpiece of a film. Unique and mesmerising and haunting.

                          All of the above.
The first time I watched it I was bothered that they never used any names in the movie.
After I saw it a few times it finally hit me.

The Australian outback is a cruel place. I should watch this incredible movie again.

Now I'll know what to do if I ever get lost in the outback of Aussie.
