Anybody out there have any idea what the title, composer and/or year of the piece sung in French at the beginning and end of the film may be?

Yes Tantemo. The title is "Vivre et Mourir". It is sung my Vanessa Redgrave.
The song was composed by John Barry (music) and John Hale (lyrics). It was an original composition especially for the film and is included on the film's soundtrack (track #2). Hope this helps

are u serious, there's a soundtrack cd available?? hard to believe, since this film seems to be largely unseen and hard to find except on amazon, i guess!?)
i still have this soundtrack on vinyl, but it's pretty scratchy.

jkescander there really is a cd available. Whether or not you can find it I do not know. I saw the cd advertised in FILM MUSIC MONTHLY magazine several years ago and you may be able to find it on E-Bay. I myself also still have this soundtrack on LP and luckily it is in mint condition. Although I do not personally hold Mr. Barry in such high esteem as you do, I do like his music for this film and a couple of his other scores, namely
            THE LION IN WINTER
            FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
            THE WRONG BOX
            ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
            THE LAST VALLEY
            and that is about it.
I agree this film has largely been forgotten. What a shame, Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson both gave excellent performances and the physical production of the film is magnificent. Maybe some day it will return to popularity.
