I think what you said is very true. I never really thought of it before your post. It is toally true that is what the devil does. He tries to get one to despair for the sins they have committed and to hide them in shae rather than confes them. When Elizabeth threatens to have the 'casket letters' of Mary and Bothwell displayed for the world to see, Mary is willing to undergoe shame as a penance for her sins in order for her to remain true to her conscience and her faith. She does this despite the hardship she has had in being imprisoned for so many years.
Mary died a martyr-which means witness. She died as a witness to her faith (which renouncing would have made her life easy as queen) despite her faults which, as you say, she repented, confesed and attempted to atone for.
