Yup, it was The Shag! Gosh, I had a "Shag" hair cut when I was just a little kid. My mom had her hair in a "shag" for years, too!
See what a difficult situation you've created. Proud of yourself now are you?

Kind of ironic that she paid for a Shag.

Logan5, thats a good one!! LOL.
Actually The Shag is back in fashion. My daughter has that cut along with many of her friends.
Worst Shag cut ever was Carol Brady's do in the brady bunch. Every time i saw her I wanted to snip off those horrible long bits.

I always thought this was an ugly haircut and I still do, longer 60's hair was sexier, this made most women look hard.

I have to correct previous posts: it's not a "shag". It's a variation on the shag and it was called the "ape drape". Paul McGregor started it, and he is the credited hairdresser for Jane in "Klute". I used to go to one of his salons for my own hairstyling in the early 70s. I wonder what became of him.

"Apr Drape" that is sooo funny. Never heard of that. My mother had really nice long hair and then in 1971 she got a shag. I was so mad at her. I truly hated that look. It was just messy and unkeptof course being a kid in the 60's and seeing all those bullet bras made me think all women had pointy breasts then the 70's rolled around and I was like, Jesus what happened to firm breasts. Not knowing bras were padded in the 60's.the 70's was all about natural but who looks good natural, if I don't shave I look homeless!

I'm a pro about the 70s; that was my prime (like Miss Jean Brodie).

It's amazing how popular the cut's become again - all the hipster girls in East London have got one, or a variation on one.

And that's why trendy fashion is so silly. It's so hot, it's so not, and then it comes back with a slight variation.

Jane definitely put that hairstyle on the map. No question about it. It was a nice change from that sprayed, lacquered stuff the shaped the 60's. It must have been liberating for women of that era to shed all that stuff and go for wash-and-wear.
Jane's variation featuring a side parting was a cool trademark for her.

LOVED her hair like that. She definitely pulled off the Klute shag. I know if it were me I'd look retarded.

It suited her face. As I posted earlier, that hairstyle wasn't a shag; the official name of it was "ape-drape". It was all the rage in the early 70s, and it was started by Paul McGregor, who happened to be the hairstylist on KLUTE.

The shag/ape drape/whatever absolutely WAS the rage in the early 70s, because Jane Fonda looked so sexy in it. There were some guys who looked hot in it too, invariably with a mustache. But while many were called, few were chosena lot who wore that fashionable cut back in the day looked bad in it, including my trig teacher. Sorry Mr. Ziminski!
