And the man driving is possessed? Or is he just on a bad hit of truckers meth. The semi trailer seems to have an usual amount of horse power.

"The semi trailer seems to have an usual amount of horse power."
It was a gas tanker truck which I suspect was empty.
It would not have looked as cool if it had just been the front cab but he would not have been pulling that weight and could have really hauled ass and ended it sooner!

I heard Dennis Weaver ask the same thing when he was right on him. Paraphrasing here: "How does he go so fast or something" yet I didn't hear him say it the last time I watched a few years ago.

I heard him say it when I watched the other night.
Which makes me think the gas tanker trailer was empty.
Besides, if it was full then the driver would have been fired for being late with it or arrested if he had stolen it.

Spielberg said in an interview,he left it up to the audience to decide if the driver and or the truck were demon possessed, but the numerous license plates on the front of the semi suggests he was a serial killer and those were his trophies.

And there you have it.
Every movie we watch is up to our own interpretation and there is no right or wrong.

I have heard that to and I suppose so.
But I remember seeing trucks with multiple license plates on the trailer back in the day.

The original 74-minute TV movie used a tag axle 1955 Peterbilt 281, making it looking like a Peterbilt 351, with two rear axles. The truck had a CAT 1674 turbocharged engine with a 13-speed transmission, making it capable of hauling loads over 30 tons and top speeds reaching 75–80 mph.So without a load, this truck could out pace that car.
